My sister to our mother…writing the rhythms of rural life

November 16, 2009
No, this picture does not represent the snowbound season my sister writes about below. It is Kidwell Farm Park in Herndon VA

Living in the Reston area can get you both your country and city fix. 45 minutes east takes you into our nation’s capitol.  45 minutes west or north takes you into rural bliss.
My sister helps give me my rural fix in word pictures.
A letter from last winter I just came across

Hazel notices the details of life

Last time I mentioned how clean the snow is here, but what I forgot to add was, when driving, sometimes it is hard to tell where the road is, when there are open fields on either side. Russ has special glasses that make it easier…and that situation doesn’t last long, because you can see the dirt /salt mix after the plows are out, and the car and truck tracks. I am still knitting baby hats in the evening. I added up the ones I had finished and sent to the hospital…over 50…. in one sense they are like the afghan quilt patterns you used to knit Mom, …there are many different options, so there is always something new and different to look forward to, and a number of different choices regarding yarn weight and color. Come spring, I probably won’t have time to do much knitting because there will be lots of outside work to do and all the other tasks will have to be shifted to the evenings. (Already under the snow are lots of willow branches just waiting for me to rake them up…on windy days, more keep falling). I always wished to have a weeping willow, but had no idea all the work that would go with it!
Also, come spring Russ will have lots of clean up to do. He likes to mow lawns like Daddy did and make paths like Uncle Archie…another thing I enjoy. (It also makes it easier to reach pick the many boysenberries in the summer.)
Each season has its down side…but the thing to do is enjoy the good things each has to offer rather than just enduring one while waiting for the next.
